I love Simon Brew’s new Den of Geek piece about Rise of the Guardians. He interviews Peter Ramsey, the animated feature’s director about the film’s relatively underwhelming box office performance. Why I am linking to it here?
I think this is a great example of the kind of personal and immediate coverage online is best at. Can you imagine a monthly print magazine taking the time to follow up on a film after the junkets were over? After the DVDs and Blu-Rays have gone out for review?
Den of Geek isn’t quite hyperniche (a publication that targets a global microculture, accessible because of the Internet’s reach). A love of popular culture is hardly rare. But it has the fannish attitude that should be core to hyperniche publishing. Passion for its subject, personal involvement and a direct connection with its audience.
